US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has accused an electronics recycling company of dumping waste in South Africa.
Tulsa, Okla-based EarthEcycle has been accused of shipping two 40-foot containers of computer monitors to South Africa in May. South African officials found that the monitors contained waste banned from import into the country.
Earlier, the EPA had filed an administrative complaint and compliance order against EarthEcycle after it exported electronic waste to Hong Kong.
EarthEcycle had contracts with six Western Pennsylvania NGOs to provide free recycling of their computers and other electronic equipment.
According to a UPI report, the company faces fines of USD37,500 a day if the EPA complaint stands and it fails to retrieve the waste from South Africa.
