GRID-Arendal was established in 1989 by the Government of Norway as a non-profit foundation to support the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in the area of environmental information. The centre was officially opened on 22 August 1989 by Prime Minister Gro Harlem Brundtland.

GRID-Arendal has served as UNEP’s key centre for information for decision-making and centre of expertise on polar and cryosphere issues. It has also provided assistance to developing coastal and island States to extend their continental shelf territories, within the context of the UN Law of the Sea.

Since its inception GRID-Arendal has focused on “bridging the gap” between science and policy. It has evolved into an internationally recognized communication centre that utilizes the latest achievements of information technology to provide decision makers from governments to individuals with targeted, timely, relevant and understandable information on sustainable development. It has made a difference by building capacities, raising awareness and helping to shape environmental policies.

The economic crisis that the world faces today presents enormous global challenges and opens unprecedented opportunities to rebuild our economies based on responsible use of our environment. GRID-Arendal has chosen the theme “Going for New Green Deal” for the anniversary celebration in support of UNEP’s Green Economy Initiative.

Together with its partners, it continues to share a vision to facilitate free access to and exchange of information in support sound decision making toward a sustainable future. “Environmental Knowledge for Change” is its slogan.
