To rely less on carbon offsets and more on energy-saving measures
Yahoo! has decided to use hydroelectric power from Niagara Falls to power its data centres in Lockport, NY. The 90 per cent of that energy will go towards powering the servers.
The centre will be using outside air to cool the servers, a task which normally gobbles up 50 per cent of a data center's energy supply.
The company is also planning to reduce the carbon footprint of all their data centers by 40 per cent by 2014 by using more renewable energy sources to power the data centers. For this, Yahoo! will go for more efficient building designs and improve the efficiency of the servers.
The company is aiming to reduce their carbon impact directly through decreasing energy consumption. It also announced that it would cease purchasing carbon offsets.
