The Government of Abu Dhabi has announced that by 2020 renewable energy sources will account for at least seven per cent of the Emirate's total power generation capacity.
The Emirate's renewable energy target is a key element of the Government's comprehensive energy policy which is expected to be published in the first quarter of 2009. The release of the Government's seven per cent renewable energy target has been brought forward to coincide with the opening of the World Future Energy Summit taking place in Abu Dhabi this week.
Mohamed Al Bowardi, secretary general of the executive council said, "The establishment of a long-term renewable energy target for Abu Dhabi builds on the Emirate's leadership in energy and sustainability. It is a further reflection of the environmental legacy established by the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan." A seven per cent renewable energy target for Abu Dhabi is large by global standards, given the relative size of the Emirate and its population. The decision will contribute to the ongoing diversification of the Emirate's economy by stimulating the local renewable energy sector.
