Fifty days needed to stop Timor sea oil leak

It will take at least 50 days to clean up an ongoing oil and gas spill from a drilling rig off Australia's northwest coast, according to PTT Exploration and Production Public Company Ltd (PTTEP).

Sweet light crude gas and condensate are spilling into the Timor Sea from the West Atlas rig 690 kilometers west of Darwin.

After the oil and gas leak incident on August 21, all 69 personnel onboard were evacuated from West Atlas, the mobile offshore drilling unit.

Following the incident, PTTEP Australasia, a subsidiary of PTTEP, has been trying to disperse the oil slick in the sea.

Anon Sirisaengtaksin, PTTEP CEO, said the company is focusing its efforts eliminating the oil slick and controlling the well in order to stop the leak. The company is consulting with international experts in both fields. It is also working closely with the Australian Maritime Safely Authority (AMSA).

To control the well, the company is planning to drill a relief well that would intersect the existing well and stop its oil and gas flow. The company has submitted the plan to the Australian government. Tthe company is also studying other methods to solve the problem.
