Photo: Andrew BossiExxon Mobil Corp will pay a fine of USD600,000 as part of a guilty plea to causing the death of 85 protected migratory birds in five states, according to the US Justice Department.Out of this fine, USD400,000 will go to the North American Wetlands Conservation Fund and USD200,000 in community service payments to the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation and a non-profit bird rehabilitation foundation.
The company was guilty of violating the Migratory Bird Treaty Act following the deaths of 85 protected birds from its oily open pits in Colorado, Wyoming, Oklahoma, Texas and Kansas.
As a result, birds like waterfowls, owls, hawks were coated with or swallowed large amounts of contaminants and most of them died.
The Justice Department has said that the company has already spent more than USD2.5 million to implement an environmental compliance plan to avoid bird deaths at the Texas-based company's facilities.
