The new climate bill proposed by Senators John Kerry and Barbara Boxer in the U.S Senate brings the country on a path towards modern and ambitious legislation but its targets remain too weak to tackle dangerous consequences of climate change, WWF said.
“It’s great that the US legislation is moving forward, and this is an important precondition for the US to be a part of a global climate agreement in Copenhagen in December. But the proposed bill still needs strengthening. The emissions reduction target is still too weak,” said Kim Carstensen, the leader of WWF Global Climate Initiative.
“It is very important to use the moment, put forward more ambitious targets and pass the legislation as soon as possible.”
“In order to avoid the worst consequences of climate change we need to see the US commit to at least 25 per cent emissions reductions from 1990 levels.
“The world is waiting to see the U.S come forward with a clear position on climate change. But we don’t have time to continue waiting, because climate change doesn’t wait. The U.S needs to rise above its domestic problems, show global leadership and unlock climate talks.”
In December governments will meet in Copenhagen to negotiate a global partnership to respond to the global crisis. Success there will depend in large part whether the US will show leadership and make firm financial commitments as well as deep emissions cuts.”
