Carrboro hired Goat Patrol, a grazing service firm based in North Carolina, to control a poison ivy infestation in a town dog park. Goat Patrol was launched by Alix Bowman, an young business school graduate.
“Goats get into a lot of stuff other workers wouldn’t want to touch. What’s poisonous to humans can be dessert to goats,” Bowman says.
Goat Patrol supplies goats for weed control. After assessing the density of vegetation, and the species mix, the firm prepare an estimate that includes the grazing time, fencing costs, and transportation fees.
Communities across the US, from Maryland to Wyoming to California, are discovering that grazing goats as a great option to control unwanted plants, low organic matter and soil compaction.
Goats prefer weeds to grasses. And they provide an environmentally sustainable option because they don't harm the environment. Aside from being environment-friendly, they are a cheaper method and provide a better long-term solution to the problem.
The benefits of goat grazing are: environmental, economical and social. Goats don't add any chemicals; they only leave organic fertilizer.
